Then of course there is the location. It is incredibly special. To step out of those enigmatic walls into a lush, green, leafy space was wonderful. It truly is a beautiful area and, I am reliably informed, very quintessentially Swedish. Being out in nature and away from the man made (as much as I adore architecture) is very important to me in terms of well being. Being able to walk out in nature and be surrounded by birdsong, greenery, mushrooms, moss and all that the Swedish landscape has to offer not just soothed my soul but gave me the space and calm I needed to properly embrace that creativity and fervent need to paint and draw.
"I was supposed to be in Canada now"… Those were my thoughts as I got off the plane at the tiny airport Stockholm Skavsta. I was terrified, but also excited - having no idea what I'm doing here or what Helsinglight really will be like. A few months before, while scrolling through facebook I found one of those sponsored adverts about an Alternative Artist in Residence, AAiR program. Normally I don’t even read these adverts, but this looked interesting to me. "Alternative Artist in Residence, somewhere in middle of Sweden, skulls, bones, nature, FX masks workshop", makeup artist.. This all sounded really interesting to me.
We had imagined Helsinglight as a house in the middle of nowhere with bears lurking in the woods and that we would spend three weeks by ourselves, creating. But as soon as we met Petra and Fredrik they greeted us with a warm welcome and were eager to get to know us and show us all the beauty of this area and the people and possibilities there.
At Helsinglight AAiR I would like to continue work on my mental health series called “Inside my Brain”. The project currently has six paintings to it with plans for several more exploring different aspects of my mental health. As part of this project I want to create a multisensory experience for people viewing the work so I plan on creating a sculptural piece that continues the work of interpreting emotions and the experience of living with mental health in a manner that can be interacted with with both touch and vision.

Helsinglight AAiR is a big project we've been planning and visualising for quite some time now. We knew from day one when we found the building for Helsinglight in September 2015 that this building would not only fulfil our artistic dreams but also do the same for many other creative souls. We set our hearts then on working towards building a creative retreat and artistic residency for others to be able to take part of too. This will now become a reality! We're launching the first steps into the build up of this project now!
