Photographer and developer Carl Öst Wilkens - next at Helsinglight AAiR

Photographer and Developer Carl Öst Wilkens will be the next creative artist trying out Helsinglight AAiR - Alternative Artist in Residence at House of Helsinglight, 9th-16th November 2019.

My name is Carl Öst Wilkens, I'm a 26 year old photographer/programmer from the woods of Delsbo, Sweden. Though I grew up close to nature, I spent most of my early years playing with computers, often until the morning hours. That is something I still do, though not as often.

The camera really has changed my perception of the world around me; nowadays, I might spend the night capturing the stars instead of sitting in front of a screen.

What got me into photography was how technically impressive cameras are when it comes to seeing in the dark. And let me tell you, the world is much more interesting at night. The problem is, your eyes are not capable of showing it to you. Capturing the northern lights with a 30 second exposure really shows the magic of it. With the right settings, a moonlit landscape becomes bright as day.

I'm looking forward to getting out of town for a while to focus completely on my creative work. I have visited the school before and know that it's a great environment for what I do. I will be spending my time at Helsinglight photographing the dark surroundings, and working on a Virtual Reality experience inspired by the eerie woods of northern Sweden.
