Helsinglight's blog: Discover a creative and magical world

We decided we want to share another creative vision and project of ours that we have been working on and planning for a while. Our work, dreams and goals with Helsinglight is to create an unique and alternative cultural destination. A destination where people from all over the world can come to create, live or visit with unique conference and event possibilities too. The very first house we're in the planning progress of now, is to build and create the "Baba Yaga hut", inspired by the tale of the witch Baba Yaga, in the Slavic Folklore.

So here’s the thing. I went to Helsinglight at an incredibly stressful time in my life. I am effectively homeless and fighting for a divorce. I also happen to be working on an art series depicting my own experiences of struggling with mental illness. I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect before going to Helsinglight.

"I was supposed to be in Canada now"… Those were my thoughts as I got off the plane at the tiny airport Stockholm Skavsta. I was terrified, but also excited - having no idea what I'm doing here or what Helsinglight really will be like. A few months before, while scrolling through facebook I found one of those sponsored adverts about an Alternative Artist in Residence, AAiR program.

During the autumn and winter, we will introduce new courses and workshops at House of Helsinglight. Everything from the creation of masks in silicone, loose parts (prosthetics), casting of the face in plaster (Lifecasting), fantasy hat making course, basic course in burlesque, etc.

During the month of July in the summer of 2019 we left our routines, habits and distractions in Stockholm and spent three weeks at the ”Alternative Artist in Residence" at Helsinglight. We got the opportunity to reflect and experiment with our respective expressions and styles. Calle - a photographer and Ivoncita - an artist and performer

Next artist arriving to try out Helsinglight AAiR - Alternative Artist in Residence will be watercolor artist Robin Tynan from Leeds, UK. Robin says art and creativity has always been a part of her life but it was only in early 2018 that she began focussing on using watercolour and fountain pen. She found the ease and speed of how images could be created to be very freeing and well suited to the peculiarities of living with a chronic illness.

We have been working so hard, so many long hours together with our carpenters to finally reach this stage where we can invite the first artist/culture workers to come and live and create at House of Helsinglight! We are happy to announce the first two artists to write Helsinglight history and launch open Helsinglight AAiR with us: Ivonne Arosenius “Ivoncita” -burlesque & dragking performer and photographer and designer Calle Elf.

We’re so excited to introduce and welcome Amfiria - the very first artist to visit and stay at Helsinglight AAiR - Alternative Artist in Residence! Amfiria hails from Istebna, southern Poland and she’s been painting since a young age, on every possible surface…
